in like a lion (or snow leopard)

March 23, 2011

I was less than thrilled when my alarm went off this morning. It took more motivation than usual to get out of bed, down the stairs, and into my car to go to the gym. During the journey from bed to treadmill I had several conversations with myself about the necessity of a trip to the gym on this particularly chilly March day and how greatly my life would be altered if I did not proceed with said trip. Really, would the world stop turning? Would my muscles implode from atrophy? Would it really be to my detriment to stay at home and watch Modern Family Sports Center the news instead?

In the end, I went to the gym. I always do. And I was glad I went. I always am.

However, by the time I left the gym, the world had changed colors. What had been brown an hour before was now white. And continuing to become more white by the minute.

Welcome, spring snow. We’ve been expecting you.

After the early to-go-or-not-to-go battle and the unwelcome ground guest I decided a bold breakfast was in order to get the day off to a more positive start. And let me tell you, it was delivered.

There’s a whole lotta breakfast love in them there bowls:

First, a Greek yogurt parfait, because even with the uncertainty of the excursion I actually ended up running for quite a while and felt like a little post-workout protein would be a good idea. Green yogurt, for those of you who have not been compelled to partake by the oddly enticing commercials, is a rich and creamy protein powerhouse with 0% fat and lots of room for creativity! I added some bananas, raspberries, granola, sliced almonds, and honey.

Round two was a small bowl of plain oatmeal…which, if we’re being honest, was basically just a vehicle for the chocolate peanut butter on top. I love adding some almond milk to the oatmeal to make it extra creamy before adding a healthy dollop of peanut butter. If I were to spout off a list of favorite comfort foods, this oatmeal would be pretty near the top.

Anchoring the breakfast relay was a hearty cup of coffee. (Duh.) Like there could be any other option! This time around it was a blueberry cinnamon crumble blend from my mom (thanks, Mom!).

Let me tell you, it was a great way to start the day. I’ve been practically peppy ever since. The snow has only increased in enthusiasm since that snapshot early this morning, but I’m actually enjoying it (please don’t send the hate mail directly to my inbox). I know that’s blasphemy at this time of year, but since I am not capable of stopping the snow and heating Western New York to a temperate and sunny 70 degrees, I’m appreciating the snow globe effect while it lasts. If you can’t beat ’em…

…make a big hearty breakfast, apparently. You’re sure to feel better afterward!
