day 41: want to do something good today? save a life!

October 15, 2010

I know this is unconventional, two posts in one day about two days, but please excuse the change of pace for something far more important than anything else I could write about today.

Today, the Stuff Christians Like website is holding a fundraiser. Here are the basics:

For the next 24 hours, we’re going to save thousands of lives in the Nakaseke District of Uganda with SafeWorld. How? With a malaria net. That costs $10. It’s that simple. 1 net, costs $10, and will save at least 1 life. More than a million people die each year from malaria and the majority of them are under the age of 5.

There are a lot of good uses for $10. I was happy to give $10 in exchange for banana bread french toast in Denver and for the gas and tolls to get there. I was also eager to donate $10 to Whole Foods in exchange for groceries, some of which went into last night’s stir fry. $10 to Powell’s for used books and magazines? No problem! All of these seem to me to be fair, appropriate, decent expenditures.

I can often find a good home for a $10 bill. But literally saving someone’s life? That usually doesn’t make the list of things $10 can do.

Today, it does.

Please, please, please check out the full post on the SCL website, which you can find here, and consider using $10 in an extraordinary way today. You’d be hard pressed to find a better home for any $10 bills you can spare.
